Yom Kippur 2026: Our Holiday Hours and a Fall Floor Checklist

Yom Kippur Holiday Hours

Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, September 20, 2026, and ends at nightfall on Monday, September 21, and our team is closed for the holiday. Here is exactly when we are closed and when we are back:

• Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19: our regular schedule, open Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and closed Saturday.
• Sunday, September 20: closed for Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown. On a normal week we are open Sundays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so please note the change.
• Monday, September 21: closed for Yom Kippur, which ends at nightfall. On a normal week we are open Mondays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, so please note the change.
• Tuesday, September 22: back to our regular hours from 9:00 AM.

What Is Yom Kippur?

Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, the most solemn day of the Jewish year. It falls on the tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which this year is Monday, September 21, 2026, in the year 5787. It is a full fast day given over to prayer and reflection.

The day begins at sundown. Here in Metro Detroit, candle lighting is at 7:15 PM on Sunday, September 20, and the fast ends at 8:13 PM on Monday, September 21 (times from Hebcal for Metro Detroit).

A few of the customs you may see this week:

• The fast. Yom Kippur is a full fast, from sundown on Sunday until nightfall on Monday.
• A day of prayer. Much of the day is spent in synagogue, from Kol Nidre on Sunday evening through the closing service on Monday.
• Wearing white. Many people wear white on Yom Kippur as a sign of the day.
• The greeting. Gmar Chatima Tova is the traditional wish, that you be sealed for a good year. Many people also wish each other an easy and meaningful fast.

Because the fast runs from sundown on Sunday to nightfall on Monday, our team is away for the whole of Monday, and we are back at work on Tuesday morning.

A Fall Floor Checklist

The quiet days around the holiday are a good moment to look after the floors in your home, with the heating season not far off. None of this takes long:

• Put felt pads on chair legs. Dining chairs slide in and out every evening. Felt pads under the legs help protect hardwood and LVP from scratches.
• Put a mat at every entry. Fall brings wet leaves, grit and more foot traffic. A mat at each door catches much of it before it gets tracked across the floor.
• Wipe spills on hardwood right away. Blot a spill with a soft, damp cloth and dry the spot, rather than letting liquid sit on the finish or run into the seams.
• Look for loose, squeaky or cupping boards. Before the winter heating season starts, walk each room and note any board that moves, squeaks, or has edges sitting higher than its center, which is called cupping. Spotting them now gives you time to plan.
